“To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson.

When Pepper Passport first launched, we did so with a series of pre published stories – one of which was the Morning Routine of jewellery designer and Brisbane born girl Courtney Harris – a true gem, who shone just as brightly as the jewels and designs she created, and sold to friends and strangers the world over.

A little over a month ago, that gorgeous creature – who believed so much in the creation of PP from the get-go and was a paramount source of support in its inception, passed away. The result of a long term fight against the depths of depression and anxiety. A battle she fought bravely to the end, and a death that while ultimately devastating to those she loved, and loved her, does have something akin to a ‘silver lining.’

Following her death donations in her name flowed through to the Black Dog Institute, a fund her family will use to benefit those currently struggling. It is a fund that so far has amassed over $56,000, and continues to grow, making it one of the highest donations in the history of the foundation.

And the acts of kindness continue to flow – now with the call from her closest friends to establish a chair in her name – #onechaironechat in her beloved Bondi – her final hometown, and the place where she’d watch the sunrise, and set so often, often accompanied by her rather large dog, Hunter.

“Our aim is to create plaque on an existing chair or build a new one in honour of her. This chair will be a place for those that want to reflect, remember or simply take a moment to enjoy the view. But most importantly the chair will be a place for people who are having a bad day, difficult time or battling a life long struggle can come to know they are not in it alone. The plaque will include details of a suicide support line along with her name to create awareness of an issue that has been in the dark for too long.”

It’s a simple idea, but the best ones always are. The process is clear, and so too the desired outcome. Let’s get more chairs out there starting with Courtney’s. Let’s get chatting.
